CFC Media Lab Alumnus Receives I.D. 2010 Annual Design Review Award

Congratulations to CFC Media Lab Alumnus, Tahir Mahmood, whose mortar & pestles continue to garner awards! The I.D. 2010 Annual Design Review awarded Silver to Tahir’s “Chattoo Wattas” in the Consumer Product Category!

Since 1954, the I.D. Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure.

Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners who focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design.

Out My Window Nominated for IDFA Doc Lab Award

Congrats to NFB/Interactive and Gerry Flahive, Kat Cizek, Branden Batuhin, Heather Frise, and the hundreds of photographers and researchers that made HIGHRISE: Out My Window happen! You deserve this nod!

IDFA presents a new documentary award: the IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Storytelling. The prize (Canon 5D Mark II camera, made available by Canon) is awarded to the DocLab project that uses digital technology in the most creative and effective way to tell a documentary story.

The award winner will be determined by an international jury consisting of Alexandre Brachet (Gaza-Sderot.com, Prison Valley 2009), Antoinette Hoes (Leylines) and Zach Wise (The New York Times).

KENK Makes Quill & Quire’s Book Of the Year 2010 Non-Fiction List

HUGE congratulations to Alex Jansen (Pop Sandbox) and his fabulous team for making Quill & Quire‘s Book of the Year List 2010 with their graphic novel KENK: A Graphic Portrait. (Check out the other top dogs who made the list.)

is a ground-breaking 304-page journalistic comic book detailing the life and times of Igor Kenk, “the world’s most prolific bicycle thief” (The New York Times and The Guardian). In summer 2008, Kenk was arrested and nearly 3,000 bicycles were seized in one of the biggest news stories of the year. Built from more than 30 hours of never-before-seen intimate footage taken over the year leading right up to his arrest, KENK is a thought-provoking and surprisingly funny portrait of an outsize neighbourhood figure and a city in flux.

WANTED: Canada’s next award-winning digital documentary!

Do you have a digital documentary idea? One that can attract a large community, win critical success on the world stage, or innovate with a successful business or creative approach? The docSHIFT Institute will support up to four experienced creators with innovative digital documentary project ideas. selected participants will receive mentorship, professional consultation and some financial support to complete their project or create a prototype.

docSHIFT is presented in partnership with Ryerson University, Hot Docs, CFC Media Lab and the National Film Board.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the company’s projects
  • Operational Management – Regularly audit existing production, resourcing, budgets and schedules
  • Departmental budget – Overall accountability for all project budgets and timesheets
  • Staffing Strategy – In consultation with the CEO, GM and HR develop a long term staffing strategy to build core production capability over time
  • Member of the Executive Team – Work as a member of the Executive team to set, communicate and execute the company strategic plan
  • Project Planning – In conjunction with the GM and department directors take new projects into production by organizing the resourcing and establishing scheduled targets and goal
  • Project Management – Present project plans to the CEO for approval. Track, manage and report on projects to ensure that the project goals are being met. Take responsibility for ensuring that issues (support, infrastructure, hiring or technical) affecting projects are resolved
  • You will be responsible for all financial aspects of the project financials including direct project labour costs, change orders and other associated project hard costs. You are expected to work closely with finance department in actualizing project reports and maintaining or growing margins
  • Project Manager Management and Performance – Provide mentoring and drive annual performance reviews of senior project management roles and core production roles
  • Project Debriefs – Manage the documentation and organization of debriefs at the end of each project

The interactive web component of Storming Juno was created by Secret Location’s Executive Producer/Writer and CFC Media Lab Alumnus, James Milward.

Seeking Visionaries for The Delphi Survey


The Delphi Survey
Calling all industry professionals, media experts and “pro ams” with experience/expertise in publishing, music, broadcast, online, mobile, news, film, and all of the emerging forms which cross these traditional boundaries, to share their vision of the future of media, and to explore the many uncertainties which will shape that future.

2020 Media Futures (2020mediafutures.ca) is an ambitious, multi-industry strategic foresight project designed to understand and envision what media may look like in the year 2020.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE…

The Delphi Survey! This is a two-round online survey, designed to seek consensus from subject-matter experts (such as yourself) on issues which are unsettled, unpredictable, or uncertain, but yet could have major impacts on the media landscape of the year 2020.

Round two of the survey is open today! It will only take about 30 minutes to complete.

Note: The Delphi survey will not ask you to recount your perspective on past or current events, but will capture your views on where you think things are going.

By participating in 2020 Media Futures, you’ll be contributing your vision to an innovative research project which will help build capacity and drive innovation in Ontario’s Creative Cluster by helping companies and organizations to ‘future-proof’ themselves, preparing for opportunities and challenges brought on by the rapid evolution of media.

Through the practice of “strategic foresight,” the project will enable stakeholders to better manage uncertainty through deeper understanding and anticipation of change.
